ODYSSEY OF THE MIND

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem solving competition that includes students from kindergarten to twelfth grade. During the year, each team works on a long-term problem, where students learn to think divergently and creatively and to work as a team. All students were involved in brainstorming, designing, building, testing, redesigning, rebuilding and retesting their “solutions” to the problems.

In addition to the long-term problem, each team had to compete in the spontaneous part of the competition in which the students are required to solve problems as a group with only minutes to prepare. They are judged on their solutions as well as their ability to work together under pressure. Each team is judged at the Regional, State, and World levels against other teams within their division (age group).

Abington Heights has Odyssey of the Mind teams representing all of the schools in the School District.  This past year, Abington Heights School District had roughly 90 students, participate in this creative problem solving competition that includes students from kindergarten through high school. It was another successful year in the 2014-2015 season. At the regional level of competition, 13 teams participated and 6 teams scored high enough to advance to the State Tournament. 3 of those teams advanced to the World Finals, that was held in May, 2015, at Michigan State Univ., East Lansing, MI.
